The Bob Watson Archive: Useful Information And Frequently Asked Questions
Where is The Bob Watson Archive based?
The Bob Watson Archive can be found at the Stephen Joseph Theatre, Scarborough, England.

Why The Bob Watson Archive?
Bob Watson founded the Archive at the Stephen Joseph Theatre and for many years was the honorary archivist at the theatre, helping to organise and bring together the collections. Tragically, Bob died in 2004 and the archive was renamed on 28 December 2006 (Bob's birthday) in memory of his contribution to the Stephen Joseph Theatre.

What does the Archive contain?
The archive holds archival material concerning the history of the Stephen Joseph Theatre from its creation in 1955 to the present day. As a result of this, it contains a substantial collection pertaining to Alan Ayckbourn, the artistic director of the theatre from 1972 to 2008, who has staged the majority of the world premieres of his plays at this venue. The archive contains an extensive collection of original programmes, posters, photographs, reviews and press cuttings. It is also the only place in the world to hold a complete collection of every Ayckbourn play-script.

What is the name of the current archivist?
The full-time archivist is Simon Murgatroyd.

How do I contact The Bob Watson Archive?

All requests are initially dealt with via email or phone contact. Experience has shown the majority of enquiries can be dealt with successfully in this manner.   Concerning Research
Can I email questions about the plays and their histories to the Archive?
Yes. However - particularly with regard to students - the archive is a resource and not an essay-writing service. It can provide information and details about plays, but each request will be dealt with on its own merits.

Can it provide copies of reviews and programmes?
Yes, in a digital format. Reviews and articles are held in a digital format on practically all of Alan's plays. The pertinent parts of most programmes (cover, cast and crew details, relevant programme notes) are also held in a digital format. These can be emailed out. As with all material of this nature, it is copyrighted to the original publication / writer and should be credited as such.

Is there any where I can find out about the history of a specific play?
At this website there are extensive introductions and histories to all of Alan's plays - approved by the playwright himself - available in the Plays section of the site. By clicking on specific plays, you will also be able to find programme notes, articles and quotes by Alan Ayckbourn about the plays.

Can I access the original manuscripts of both published and unpublished Alan Ayckbourn plays?
Yes. The Bob Watson Archive is the only place to hold a complete set of Alan Ayckbourn's plays - both published and unpublished. This collection also includes the revues, adaptations, children's plays, original screenplays, one act plays and the Grey Plays. It is worth noting that many of these are original manuscripts that differ from the final published version and offer fresh insight into the original productions.   Unfortunately...
Can the Archive provide me with technical details of past productions for my own productions?
The Archive cannot provide this type of information.

Can the Archive provide copies of scripts for loan?
No. Due to copyright issues, the theatre cannot loan scripts for performance.

Can The Archive send me a copy of a script for research / study purposes?
No. Most of the Ayckbourn scripts available in the Archive have been published and are available to buy. For the scripts not published, arrangements can be made to read the script at the Stephen Joseph Theatre. We do not hold digital copies of scripts due to legal / copyright issues and do not plan to do so in the immediate future.

Does the Archive hold recordings of the TV / Film productions of Alan Ayckbourn's work?
The Archive does not hold copies of the filmed productions of Alan Ayckbourn's productions. It is also a policy of both Alan Ayckbourn and the Stephen Joseph Theatre not to make filmed recordings of productions at the theatre.
